Moving to Assisted Living Checklist

Moving a loved one into assisted living can be a nerve-wracking process. It’s perfectly normal to have reservations and feel various strong emotions. Plus, many logistical factors can certainly contribute to your overall stress. That’s why we created this simple moving to assisted living checklist to support you and your loved ones during the process. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind.

1. Address Healthcare Needs

There are several health-related concerns that should always take priority. Make an appointment with your current primary care physician before moving to assisted living. If you’re relocating to a new area, you may want to find a new, nearby doctor, as well. Some assisted living communities have Nurse Practitioners as healthcare providers that can also serve as your Primary Care Partner (PCP).

2. Decide How You Will Move

Few activities are as stressful as moving, especially from a family home with years of shared memories. It’s important to take things one step at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed. Make a plan, stick to it, and ask for support from trusted friends and family members.

Most people will opt to hire a moving company. This can take a bit of research, but it will save a lot of time and frustration in the long run. Look at online reviews, ask friends for recommendations, and call a few places to get a range of quotes. Check if they’re willing to move unique items or heavy furniture like beds and wardrobes. If you’re moving by yourself, then take your time, enlist as much help as possible, and consider renting a larger vehicle, if necessary.

3. Prioritize Packing

We always recommend packing as much as possible in advance. This is especially true of things that are only used sparingly. Essential items like personal care products, clothing, and electronics can remain unpacked until closer to the final moving date.

Keep a bag or two of day-to-day items on hand. Always have plenty of fluids, healthy snacks, chargers, and backup batteries nearby at all times. Pack official forms and legal documents somewhere both safe and accessible. Make sure to also take breaks often. Allow yourself some grace—things may not work out exactly as you planned, and that’s okay.

The Week Prior

Proper preparation can help reduce the stress of relocating for everyone involved. A simple schedule or calendar can work wonders in this regard. One week before moving to an assisted living facility, you’ll want to do a few specific things.

  • Ensure that all necessary documents have been signed and received by the facility.
  • Record any new contact information for your family members and their physicians.
  • Gather vital information needed for the moving process such as keys, parking instructions, and the best times to transport belongings.

Begin Creating Memories

At first, moving to an assisted living facility may be intimidating. One fantastic way to ease this transition is to make the space look and feel familiar. Consider placing personal items where your loved one is used to seeing them. Bring out artwork, family photos, and treasured belongings to decorate each room. Doing this will make their new area feel more like home, and it may even improve their quality of life.
